For this painting I used a unusual compositional structure called Even Spread. Even Spread composition is a distribution of elements and parts spread equally throughout the painting. The idea behind the Even Spread composition is to keep the viewer from settling on any one part and to respond to the picture plane’s overall patterns. This structure is used mostly by abstract artists such as Jackson Pollock. Just knowing about this type of composition helped me to understand some of the abstract art I enjoy but have never been able to understand the composition or how the artist might have been thinking while painting. You don’t just dribble the paint onto the canvas, if it were that easy everyone would have been doing it, there had to be some thought process involved.
Even Spread has also been used by Glustav Klimt, "The Park" and it is this painting I was thinking of when I was painting Bright Day. When I go to museums I search for compositional structures in order to learn and understand, last time I was at the IMA I found one by T.C. Steele, unfortunately I did not write down the name but I can still visualize it in my head.
