I am a landscape painter juxtaposing color in pastel to create the illusion of light.

Recently when out Plein air painting in the early morning heat. I thought that if I had every single color in the back of my car with me while painting, I would still not have the right color. Even if I did have all those colors in the back of my car, finding the right color would still be a difficult task.  With that information in mind, knowing that I will never have the exact right color that I want, I have to resort to the adage, "if you have the right value, then you have the right color." I do not search for the right color when painting but the right value. John F Carlson's theory of consequent values is an essential tool when considering the landscape in terms of value, not color. His book "Guide to Landscape painting" is affordable and available almost anywhere.
